December 2009 - 1 in 8 Driving Instructors are not qualified!

According to the AA, up to 7000 trainees - one in eight of all driving instructors - are believed to be working for driving schools across the UK. Driving schools can place a learner with a trainee instructor and charge full lesson rates, without telling the pupil or their parents that the instructor is not fully-qualified.

The ADI qualifying tests

An Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) is someone who has passed all three parts of the ADI qualifying tests and is currently registered with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).

Before they can apply to join the ADI Register, a Potential Driving Instructor must pass three qualifying tests:

  • a theory test
  • a driving ability assessment
  • a test of instructional ability

They must also take a criminal record check before applying to start the qualifying process, as well as when they apply to renew their registration or rejoin the Register.

Once registered, a ADI must also pass special tests - 'check tests' - at certain intervals. These are to satisfy the registrar that the ADI still meets the DSA's standards for ability and fitness to give instruction.

Trainee Instructors

Once a candidate has passed the first two parts of the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) qualification examination, they can apply for a trainee licence to help them gain experience instructing pupils to drive.

A trainee licence allows them to earn an income giving driving instruction, but even though it should not be regarded as a sole means of making a living or as an alternative to registration as an ADI it often is. The trainee licence lasts six months and normally only one is granted in a qualifying period.

The current pass rate for the final test of instructional ability is only 28 %. That means of the current 7000 trainees less than 2000 will eventually qualify. 5000 instructors that have been allowed to train pupils, and charge full prices will never be assessed as safe and qualified to teach people how to drive.

Qualified or Unqualified?

You can recognise an ADI because he/she will display a green badge in the tuition vehicle's front windscreen.

They are also checked and graded regularly, grading ranges from '1' to '6'. The highest grade is '6' and the minimum acceptable grade is '4'. Instructors who have a grade of '3' or lower are placed under review and risk having their tuition licence revoked due to poor teaching practice.

Instructors are issued with a certificate which shows their grade, they should be happy to show this if asked.

Trainee Licensed Instructors are in the final stages of training and qualification. These instructors have undergone a minimum required training programme but have not yet passed the final qualifying examination.

While Licensed Instructors are expert drivers and have learned the basic teaching skills, they have less than six months experience in the job. You can recoginse a Licensed Instructor because he/she will display a pink badge in the windscreen.

ARC Driver Training Centre launches new Instructor Training Company -January 2010

ARC Driver Training, has always had a unique opportunity to assist trainee instructors in gaining experience with real pupils whilst still maintanin quality and safety at all times.

Trainee instructors have been able to assist a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor with their pupil's training, by providing only lower prices sessions, where the pupil is fully aware of their trainee instructors needs and the session is looked upon as additional practice.

Trainee instructors inccur no additional costs in taking up the scheme, unlike many other driving school schemes, where they often need to provide a car, insurance and pay fees to the driving school, before they even start taking on pupils.

ARC Instructor Training will be offering Instructor courses on a pay as you go scheme, meaning that initail debt can be avoided by our customers and therefore time can be spent on getting the most from training opportunities.

Inspired by John Farlam, an industry leader with over 30 years experience within driver training, success based learning programme's will offer a different more effective way to qualification and a new career.

For further information on instructor training opportunites look out for our new updated website in January or e-mail instructors@arc-dtc.com.

Wishing you all a safe and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Safe motoring,
